Escuela de música Reina Sofía
The Reina Sofía School of Music is a top-level music academic center
The Reina Sofía School of Music was created in 1991 with the double aim of supporting the development of young musicians and bringing music closer to society. 25 years later, it is considered to be among the main music schools in the international panorama. Her Majesty Queen Sofía is its Honorary President, and the School’s Board of Trustees gathers both public and private institutions under a common goal.
The 150 students from 30 different countries who currently study at the School have been selected solely upon their personal merits. They receive a customized education from the best specialists in the world, and have the chance to perform in more than 350 public concerts organized by the School in the most prestigious music halls in Spain and abroad.
Almost all students are granted tuition scholarships and, if necessary, also accommodation and instrument scholarships. The concerts offered by the School are open to the public. Half of them are free or have a reduced price, and nearly all of them have special conditions for students, unemployed people and elderly people. These concerts are offered to school children, families, and hospitals. Altogether, the School annually benefits more than 70,000 people. The School’s Alumni, around 700 musicians scattered around the world, conform a large family that enriches since quite a few years the Spanish musical life.
Since the 2015-2016 academic year, the School offers the official Bachelor’s Degree within the European Bologna framework. The study programs offered by the School are Undergraduate Preparatory Program, Bachelor’s Degree in Music, and Postgraduate Improvement Program; and they all contribute to provide the students with a holistic education, which allows them to locate music within its historical and ideological historical context and to link it with other artistic and cultural manifestations.
The School works actively to keep its quality level and, at the same time, to increase its impact and adapt to the realities of the sector, which evolves quite rapidly. There are three key projects currently running: academic development (new departments, educational program on entrepreneurship in the music world, several master’s degrees), corporate development (broadening of alliances with different social sectors, income diversification and increase), and new audiences’ development (both on-site and on-line).
The School is the main program of the Albéniz Foundation, a non-profit private institution founded in 1987 by its President, Paloma O’Shea.
