Marqués de Murrieta Estates & Wines
Marqués de Murrieta: The winery that gave birth to the Rioja wines, innovating since 1852
The origins of Marqués de Murrieta go back to the 19th century when Luciano de Murrieta, an entrepreneur well ahead of his time, built the emblematic Castillo de Ygay on his Ygay Estate and made it the headquarters of Marqués de Murrieta winery. In the castle he replicated the French chateau concept, applying techniques learnt in Bordeaux for the production and ageing of his wines. In 1852, the legend of the first Rioja wines began.
Over the last 25 years, Vicente Dalmau Cebrián-Sagarriga, the Count of Creixell and current Chairman and CEO of Marqués de Murrieta, has revitalised the historic winery, and has developed his exporting activities. Combined with his profound awareness of business and wine, his youth and intrepid vision have made him an important link between the winery’s history and its future.
Consequently, Marqués de Murrieta has won awards all over the world, and 165 years after its foundation, it has become a standard bearer for quality wine.
INNOVATING SINCE 1852
The Castillo de Ygay was built in the mid-19th century by Luciano de Murrieta, replicating the concept of a Bordeaux chateau in the unbeatable setting of the Ygay Estate. It was here that the first fine Rioja wine, Marqués de Murrieta, was created.
The Castillo de Ygay, Marqués de Murrieta’s iconic castle, has benefited from an ambitious restoration project, representing now the perfect balance between respect for the past and a promising future ahead, comprising more than four thousand square meters of stone and containing valuable documentation and equipment from the earliest days of Rioja wine production as well as one of the most extensive collections of historic bottles in the world.
History and cutting-edge technology combine in the Castillo de Ygay, where unique and exclusive tasting rooms are ready to welcome private group tours (both small and large) and multi-purpose rooms are available for companies and individuals.
The Ygay Estate is located in the south of Rioja Alta, surrounding the winery with its 300 hectares of vineyards and providing absolute control over the estate’s most valued asset: its five grape varieties. A tour of its vineyards is a glimpse into Spain’s most important estate dedicated exclusively to the world of wine.
100% of the wine produced in this winery is made with grapes from the Finca Ygay. This limited production gives its wines a level of quality and exclusivity that would be impossible to achieve otherwise. It is also one of the most international wineries, as it exports 70% of its production to nearly one hundred countries.
Marqués de Murrieta has undergone a total renovation that has exalted the winery as one of the best wineries in the world. At an international level, they have recognized this revival of Marqués de Murrieta granting the winery with numerous awards.
